BioDent™
What is BioDent™?BioDent™ is a bench-top Reference Point Indentation platform that enables scientists to easily measure the material properties and function of tissues and biomaterials. The in vitro to in vivo testing modes set BioDent™ apart from other instruments, enabling the acquisition of data about material properties and function that was previously impossible.

Why do I need BioDent?
Direct MeasurementsBioDent allows for direct measurement, rather than a surrogate, of tissue function in a clinically relevant way. | Ease of UseNo extensive technical background is necessary to learn how to use BioDent. | First & Only SolutionBioDent is the first device of its kind. Direct, clinically relevant measurement of tissues is providing never before available insight into tissue function. |
It is generally understood that material properties are an important contributor to tissue and biomaterial health. However, no instruments have been available to easily measure these properties in the laboratory in a way that can translate into clinical practice – often causing this important information to be excluded from research. Also, no tools have previously been available to measure tissue material properties in vivo – resulting in frequent exclusion of their evaluation in life science research altogether. |
BioDent™ is the first and only solution for life science researchers to easily and directly obtain clinically measurable material properties.
How does BioDent™ work? |
|
BioDent™ uses a microscopic test probe to touch a tissue or biomaterial and evaluate material function/response. The test probe can be sheathed inside a small cannula reference probe which establishes a reference point on or in the sample. In force-controlled mode, BioDent™ measures the distance the test probe moves relative to the reference point as an indication of how much the material gave-way or flowed when pushed on at controlled force. For advanced users, a distance-controlled mode BioDent™ measures the force required to push a test probe a predetermined distance into the material, relative to the reference point. |

What does BioDent™ l me? |
BioDent™ outputs have been used to describe the mechanical effect of tissue health, treatment, and disease. Hard and soft tissues are comprised of many material components that come together to give tissue its desired function. Understanding how tissue function changes due to treatment or disease opens a new perspective on health. |
Depending on your setup, BioDent™ can probe across the micrometer to millimeter length scale in order to provide a robust measure across all material components in the tissue or biomaterial. BioDent™ can also provide previously impossible direct, in vivo measures of tissue function – clinically measurable material properties. |
How easy is it to use BioDent™?
Like every scientific instrument there is some training required before using BioDent™, however unlike many scientific instruments, no extensive technical background is necessary. Active Life Scientific, Inc. provides all training material with the instrument, sufficient to get a non-technical scientist up and running in a few hours or less. For Advanced Users, certain BioDent™ configurations offer access to waveform control inputs and data analysis outputs through layered interfaces.
In just 30 seconds, a trained user can perform a mechanical test.
|
What tissues and biomaterials can I test with BioDent™?
BioDent™ is designed for in vitro to in vivo testing of a growing number of tissues and biomaterials. Visit Literature to discover the various animals, tissues, and disease/research models already proven on the BioDent™ platform. BioDent™ was initially introduced for hard materials applications, such as bone, however softer materials applications are quickly emerging. Can’t find what you’re interested in testing? What is OsteoProbe® ?
OsteoProbe® (for research use only in the United States) is a portable handheld microindenter that measures the ability of bone material to resist indentation. Unlike radiological methods (X-ray, DXA and CT) that measure bone mineral density and bone mineral structure, OsteoProbe® measures bone material quaility; an independent component of bone strength.
OsteoProbe® uses Reference Point Indentation (RPI) technology to investigate the bone material’s ability to resist a localized force (resist separation of mineralized collagen fibrils). This is quantified by the Bone Material Strength index (BMSi).
Direct Measurements
Every measurement taken is recorded in OsteoProbe’s software, providing the most accurate data.
Ease of Use
OsteoProbe can be used by a physician, nurse, or technician after brief training.
First & Only Solution
The first and only medical device(approved in Europe) for direct measurement of bone material qualityin vivo.

What does OsteoProbe® measure?
OsteoProbe® measures and quantifies material aspects of bone, providing a clearer understanding of Bone Quality. Bone is composed of mineral and organic (Bone Glue) building blocks. Current clinical techniques provide detailed information about the mineral aspects of bone but there limited techniques to provide information about the organic aspects and function. Learn more about Bone Quality.
In the clinical setting, material properties of Bone Quality have been ignored due to the lack of a method for in vivo measurement. Reference Point Indentation (RPI) is a technique bringing change to the current situation in a clinical research setting. RPI enables physicians and researchers to have an in vivo method for directly measuring material aspects of bone quality. With RPI, physicians and researchers can measure and monitor changes in the material quality of bone.

How does OsteoProbe® work?
OsteoProbe® uses Reference Point Indentation (RPI) technology to measure bone material’s ability to resist a localized force. Utilizing a probe specifically designed for percutaneous measurements, OsteoProbe penetrates soft tissue down and touches the bone surface, establishing a local reference point. Once actuated, OsteoProbe measures the bone’s resistance to force and outputs a Bone Material Strength index (BMSi) or Bone Score.
